Facebook Timeline... the story of your life

Today, Facebook has released a new feature to the website. The feature will allow users to enhance their Facebook profiles through Timeline. Users will be able to share their life stories, which means anyone with a Facebook account can digitize their life experiences.

Zuckerberg explained the thinking behind Timeline at the conference, saying: “Millions of people curate stories of their lives on Facebook every day and have no way to share them once they fall off your profile page...we have been working on ‘timeline’ all year…it’s the story of your life and completely new way to express yourself.

“It has three pieces: all your stories, your apps and a new way to express who you are.”

To be honest, I'm a bit sceptical about this new feature. I don't think it is a good idea to be sharing all of your life's stories on a single platform. This is because it will make you susceptible to fraud. Not only that, but Facebook is likely to pass on your information to third parties; would you really want to share you life experiences to third party companies?

  1. I have been against this feature, since I first heard about it. Personally I believe Facebook know enough about us and that they don't need to know anything else about your life history. You make a good point that fraud could certainly be an issue. But Facebook are well known for making radical changes and this only causes confusion.

  2. I think it would be a great feature. There was an application that alot of people use on facebook called "the year in status", which basically takes certain status updates you have made all year and compiles them into one. I think it would work like a photo album for users, being able to look back on the year that has happened or even further back.

  3. A good aspect of this feature is that the user is able to share their timeline "story of life" with their friends. But as the original poster stated in their view I agree, you dont know who is able to see your profile and for what reasons people external of your network may want to view it.

  4. People should have enough sense not to be advertising their live history on the web anyway, not that social web makes the matter any better, especially networking sites such as Twitter. And what do we know…. Surprise! Surprise! Here comes Facebook with a new feature to add to this sad excuse for entertainment (people sharing their ‘life story’ to the whole world unasked). Can someone please tell me how much more “enhanced” a Facebook profile needs to be? I am as sceptical as you are about this new feature. Nevertheless sadly enough there are people out there who need the type of platform that Facebook provides, in order to feel ‘a part’ of something.
