We are lucky to be living in this era of social media which can play a pivotal part in our lives, more so then politicians. Have you ever stopped and thought about how these politicians get their resources to win votes? It has been a custom nowadays that we as voters (general people) tend to talk about politics everyday of our lives, whether it’s through conversation or on the social media. That is why politicians have also ‘jumped on the band wagon’ and follow the voters to progressively gain resources. More and more politicians are putting far less investment in “mainstream media” and more in social sites.
One of the main ways for politicians to get recognised is getting themselves elected. Once they do get elected, then the politicians can start their campaign. This leads to any means necessary to promote their ‘cause’ towards their campaign, and what better way to start off by using some of the famous social networking websites, we ‘voters’ use every day; Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc. Politicians tend to follow what other politicians do, and if one politicians believes they can influence votes through the use of constant twittering, then it’s only a matter of time when other politicians stats doing the ‘conga’.
Here are just some of the reasons why politicians choose social media as advertising;
· Cheap: politicians can reach millions of people through a click of a button, without wasting a lot of time and money.
· Attacks: blogs such as Facebook and twitter allow fast reaction responses to attack other ‘parties’ to prove their worth
I believe it is safe to say that we are lucky to have social media in our era, as it can affect everyone around the world, even the most powerful people. Through my experience of using social media, there are so many genres/topics that many people voice their opinion. If it wasn’t for these websites, I wouldn’t be able to have the knowledge to learn about things that I may not ever come across. Here are some of the Things i have learned through the use of social web; culture, History, religions, sports etc.
What knowledge has broadened your horizon, due to the social media?

It is certainly a better approach to reach people. For instance, using twitter people can get a much closer feel of their leaders. On top of that, politicians don't have to waste a lot of money (a lot of our money by the way) in advertisement. It's a win win.
ReplyDeleteI agree where you have mentioned "knowledge to learn about new values" Social web/media has given a mind of sharing to individuals who are not to keen on knowing what the goverment is up to. sharing information allows online users like me get a better understanding on the political insignt of what decision goverments are making that effects the scoiety. Social web has POWER ! HYPE
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of politicians jumping onto the social media scene. the whole thing started with celebrities doing it and what that allowed their fans to see is what goes on behind the scenes, hearing about their values and general everyday life, then sports personalities began drawing into the social media scene. I don't believe many people expected politicians to engage in social media, simply because quite a few of them seem very shrewd and very closed in, only letting the public know them by what is shown on tv or read in a newspaper. so politicians coming onboard social media is a breath of fresh air. It makes them seem more down to earth which would cause many people to respect them more and hear them out a lot more.
