Google+, a threat to Facebook or just another social networking site?

Reasons why Google+ could win the social site battle...
At the moment, social networking sites are thriving, although the high level of competition is causing them to constantly add new features in order to remain competitive. Facebook is currently the leader with over 2 billion users worldwide (The guardian, 2011). However, Google has gained popularity with its social networking site, Google+, and there are a number of reasons why Google are a threat to other sites, including Facebook.
Firstly, Google+ allows smart integration with Google apps. If you are already an existing user, you do not need to create a new account. This will allow collaboration across sites, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, photos, and much more. This would allow you to collaborate with other workers and share your screen when creating a document, or looking through pictures.
Secondly, Google already knows a lot about users through its apps – this includes who people e-mail, what they search for, and how often. This would benefit the user by allowing them to quickly identify their inner circle, and also those outside the company within the same industry or talking about the same topics. With this in mind, do you think Google will add a feature in the future to synchronise between your Google+ account and your android phone?
Another reason Google+ has a competitive advantage is because they are positioned very well to help you find certain content. Can you think of a better search engine then Google? Google’s index of the web is 1st class, and no one else is better positioned to help you find content from inside and outside of your company. Google+ has a feature that lets you follow topics you are interested in on the web, something that I think other social networking sites do not do very well. I already use Google news on a daily basis, and would definitely use this feature every day, meaning I would not use my Facebook account as much.
As with other sites such as Facebook, Google+ also has the features of choosing who you share certain information with, and the capability of downloading the App to your mobile phone, which keeps it up to date with current networking sites.
I think that with all of Google+’s features, it is very capable of dethroning Facebook as the leader of social networking sites. The only problem would be convincing users to transfer to Google+ as a lot of people are happy with the service they currently have with Facebook. I think Facebook needs to make some improvements and add more features instead of just new privacy settings in order to remain the market leader!
